I dug out my old notes when proposals for a new army were being put forward. The majority of datasheets in this faction have the keyword. Not a lot of people know that the core principles of the Tau Empire – a caste system based on the four elements and fifth ‘mind’ caste – came from a proposal for a new alien race I penned before I even joined GW. Far too many to list here, but the first was Codex: Sisters of Battle, which remains one of my most fondly-remembered projects to this day.ĭuring my time as Lead Background Designer I oversaw the continuing expansion of the lore of Warhammer 40,000, giving briefs and continuing support to the games development, art and miniatures design teams and working closely with the project teams producing the product. I was part of the team responsible for the heavy revision of 3rd edition and the development of 4th edition, and I’ve written and co-written a whole load of codexes, supplements and articles. For those whose memories stretch back that far, the job was making pasted mock-ups of the Wargear cards that appeared in the supplement Dark Millennium for 2nd edition 40K. My first job, day one in the GW Design Studio, was on 40K. It is a gross understatement to say that it was a dream come true when I started at Games Workshop and became part of the design team developing and expanding the game and universe. My earliest experience of the game and the Imperium of Man was playing against a friend with a space marine captain each, running around a hill throwing frag grenades at each other. Where to start? I’ve been a fan of the Warhammer 40,000 universe from my pre-teen years to the present day. Warhammer 40,000 is a Games Workshop miniatures game. The rulebook provides you with all the rules you need to play, and guides you through collecting and painting your own army of Citadel miniatures. Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop game for two or more players where you command the forces of the Imperium or one of its many enemies. Everywhere, soulless spectres and slavering monsters are poised to extinguish the life of humanity. From the immaterial realm of warp space, malicious entities send their unspeakable minions to slaughter the Emperor’s chosen. Wars rage over airless moons, in the dark, twisted depths of hive worlds and in the cold wastes between stars. The galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man is beset on all sides by ravening aliens, and threatened from within by malevolent creatures and heretic rebels. In the nightmare future of the forty-first millennium, mankind teeters on the brink of extinction. In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war.
